Autograph Letter Signed from Sophia Coutts (1775-1844) to the Parisian bookseller, Chevalier, 3 pages 4to with address (seal tear and small burn hole), Bath, 5 December 1822. Thanking him for 'the little note of Talma's in Lady Susan's Letter', and asking for more autographs to supply her friend's collection. '... for example La Fayette (sic) / Mde. Genlis, Marechal Ney / Lalande / l'Abbe Sicard / LavoisierAs a postscript she adds the names of 'David / Fourcroy / Cardinal Fesch / Lacipede / Lous Bonaparte / Humboldt'. Susan Coutts, the youngest daughter and coheir of the banker Thomas Coutts, had married the politician Sir Francis Burdett in 1793. Although the marriage had to survive a number of difficulties, not to mention Burdett's affair with Lady Oxford, with whom he probably fathered two children, it produced six children, one of whom was the philanthropist Angela Georgina Burdett-Coutts. £75 [No: 26362] The image is of the first page only. |
