PRINGLE, Thomas (1789-1834). Poet, journalist, & philanthropist.
Autograph Letter Signed to an unnamed correspondent, 2 pages 8vo (note of identification at the head), 5 Bushall Row, 1 March no year. Sending for the 'souvenir' his correspondent has offered and regretting that he cannot reciprocate as planned with a little volume because his printer, Mr Maurice, had been killed in the Brunswick Theatre disaster.
Maurice, though a printer by trade, was a part-owner of the newly-erected Brunswick Theatre. Though warned several times of the instability of the structure, he refused to call in expert assistance and the entire building fell in while workmen and rehearsing actors were in it. Maurice was killed by a torrent of bricks which buried him completely except for a foot.
Charles Dickens wrote a moving piece describing the disaster in All the Year Round.
