PEPYS, Samuel (1633-1703). Diarist.
Letter Signed ('S Pepys') to Edward Gregory, Clerk of the Cheque at Chatham, 1 page folio, Navy Office, 30 July 1668. Asking for details of the officers and men of the ships at Chatham so that their arrears of salary could be computed. Signed also by Sir John Mennes (1599-1671).
'... In pursuance of an order this day come to us dated the 29 instant from the Lords Comm[issione]rs of the Treasury you are hereby directed forthwith to provide a List containing the perticulers following viz
'The names and quallitys of all the officers at this day belonging to his Ma[jes]t[y]s yard at Chatham and the Ships now lying there in ordinary with the arreares of wages due to each thereof.
'The names and conditions of each man & boy of every quallity at this day employed by his Ma[jes]tie in and about the said Yard, expressing in distinct collumes his wages p[er] diem, and the totall in arreare to each man ...'
The letter continues with explicit instructions on putting the data into two separate columns.
