POLIGNAC, Camille Armand, Prince de (1832-1913). French nobleman, scholar & soldier; joined the Confederate Army.
Autograph Letter (third person) to the Comte de Mulinen, 1 page 8vo (stains resembling coffee), Paris, 16 September no year. Assuring him that the coat destined for the Comte de Mandelstok will be delivered.

Polignac, known affectionately to his troops as Prince Polecat, rose to become a major general in the American Civil War.

The letter in question is not from Camille Armand Jules Marie, Prince de Polignac, the Confederate Major-General. It is in fact from his father, Jules Auguste Armand Marie de Polignac an interesting figure in his own right. Jules de Polignac spent some time in exile in London after the French Revolution, and after the restoration of the Bourbons was French Ambassador to London (1823-1828) and then President of Charles X's Council of Ministers He had many friends in London, and both if his wives were British.

His handwriting is quite different from his son's, and this is clearly a much older letter than (for example) the one from the son, Camille de Polignac, which I bought from you two or three years ago. Camille de Polignac was born in 1832, Jules de Polignac died in 1847.
