PALEY, Frederick Apthorp (1815-1888). Classical scholar & writer.
Three Autograph Letters Signed to Cox, in all 12 pages 8vo, Cambridge, Poole and Apthorp, Boscombe, 1871, 1882 and 1885. Long, thoughtful letters touching on classical studies, Christian theories, and his own beliefs.
'... I have been trying to realize what the writers mean by "the Son of God", & by the notion, so absolutely unintelligible to us "only begotten Son" etc.
'The first remark that strikes me is that the writers were all "Unitarians"; they
distinguish God from Christ, and it seems to me, they viewed Christ as they viewed Moses, or Elias, or Melchizedeck - something above "angels" but below God himself, though honoured with a "seat at his right hand". ...'
'... I have been reading again my Grandfather's Natural Theology. It is curious how he ridicules, & misrepresents, Evolution, which had more adherents in his day than I had fancied. ...'
