WOOLF, Virginia (1882-1941). Novelist. Autograph Letter (unsigned) on a postcard to her brother-in-law, Clive Bell in Paris [5 June] 1930. Drawing his attention to the photograph on the card (the Royal Horse Guards in Whitehall), to remind him of the Empire, complaining of writer's block and various domestic misfortunes. '... I'm so scarified with domestic horror - operations - kidneys - cooks - Nelly in hospital - dinner without any food ...'Virginia Woolf had taken a new cook, Mrs Taupin, whom she dismissed and rapidly took another as Nelly (the original cook) was likely to be away until September. She ends the note by sending love to Frances [Birrell], one of Clive's mistresses. There is a brief list of items written across the top of the card in another hand (Clive Bell?) - 'Cook / rooms / car / box / trousers' etc. See The Letters of Virginia Woolf, ed. Nigel Nicolson (vol. 4), No. 2187. [No: 23291]
