Autograph Letter Signed to Mr ?Bankes, 1½ pages 8vo (spike filing hole in the centre without loss of paper), 12 February 1835. A grovelling apology for having failed to meet a obligation.
Haydon's correspondent may well be the Mr Bankes to whom (and whose sister) he so warmly refers in the Diary (see vol. IV page 458 and V page 85).

'Your Gentlemanly conduct to me, is kind beyond measure - but if you knew how unfortunate I have been this last month - when I undertook a small Picture expressly to meet my engagements with you - objections were raised to the subject in the highest quality - and both publisher & I the painter have agreed it is better to give it up so I have got to work over again at something else to raise the money. I will call at your Home on Monday early & see if we cannot arrange the whole. I do not wonder at your not being able to call on me. I am ashamed to see you - I declare to God'
