KEPPEL, Augustus, first Viscount (1725-1786). Admiral. Letter Signed to Lord Shuldham, Vice-admiral of the White, 1 page folio (a little worn), Victory, St Helens Road [Portsmouth], 2 July 1778. Asking Shuldham to ensure that the commanders of the Albert and Rattle Snake wait at Plymouth for their orders. A letter written at a crucial time in Keppel's naval career. He had been appointed Commander-in-Chief of the Grand Fleet in March of this year, but found the fleet very ill-prepared for action. He had sailed from Portsmouth on 20 June with twenty ships and had sighted the French fleet, but, finding it far superior, had returned to port for reinforcements, eventually leaving again on 9 July. The present letter was written in the interim. [No: 20958]
