POPE, John (1822-1892). American military commander.
Autograph Letter Signed to R[utherford] B Hayes, President of the United States, 3 pages 8vo (the second leaf inlaid), Fort Leavenworth, 16 February 1878. Pressing the claims of a lawyer, Mr Robbins Little to a new position, and urging the President to interview him.
'I am greatly interested in Mr Robbins Little who is now civil lawyer in the office of Judge Advocate General Dunn of the Army. Mr Little is a profound lawyer & a man of great culture in other directions, but is one of those modest closet men who seem incompetent to put themselves forward ... I understand from Mr Clarence King who is a nephew of Mr Little that Mr Evarts is looking out for a competent person to be appointed Examiner of Claims in the State Department. ...'
